Genesis 6-7

Key Verse 6:22

- God blessed them and Men were multiplied many on earth according to God’s promise of Ge1:28,. Today’s story teaches us why God judged men by the flood. Especially we can see how men’s state was after they sinned. The whole of this text demonstrate how wicked man has become. Before the history of the ruin of the old world, we have a full account of its degeneracy, the abandonment from God and rebellion against him.

- His wickedness is so profound, it is so systemic, it is so far reaching. They have reached the point where they are no longer redeemable in the eyes of God. The destroying of it was an act, not of an absolute sovereignty, but of necessary justice, for the maintaining of the honor of God's government.

- Consequently this is a description of the wickedness of man, which causes God's judgment in the universal Flood. God drowned the entire world with the exception of eight people, Noah, his wife, three sons and their wives. It also gives us wisdom how to live in this corrupted generation through Noah’s life. Our life is to build up our ark of salvation.

* Men’s corruption (1-8)

1 After human beings were increased, what was their marriage view changed? (1-2) What is the original purpose of marriage? (Ge2: 18-26, 2Co 6:1-3 2 Cor. 6:14, Deut. 7:3,4 ,1 Kings 11:1-4). What was God’s plan? (3).

1When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose 3Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with£ man forever, for he is mortal£; his days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

-First, The increase of mankind: Men began to multiply upon the face of the earth. This was the effect of the blessing (Ge1:28).But man's corruption deteriorated and perverted this blessing that it was turned into a curse.

- Second, their marriage-In Chapter 4,5, we can see the Cain’s decedents and Seth’ decedents. So populations were so rapidly multiplied.

V2, the sons of God indicate the descendents of Seth.

-The daughters of men indicate the descendents of Cain. Their lives was just physical and impious, profane lives. Their lives were aliens from God. The marriage represents the central value system of their lives. Man of God chose the daughters of men according only outward beauty. Man of God followed their corrupted affection without advice and consideration (2Cor 6:14,Deut 7:3,4, 1Kings 11:1-4,Eza 9:1,2) They had Intermarriage with ungodly women. They intermingled themselves with the excommunicated race of Cain So that God didn’t want to dwell with them.

a) Marriage identifies one’s value system. It should be related out purpose of life and happiness and count of our life later. Marriage came from God, not man, but to serve God better. However godly men didn’t have any value system as godly people. Sin contaminated their mind, thought and value system. Sin always has powerful infectious. Sin prevailed over them. We always are influenced unless God’s protection. It leads us into God’s wrath.

b) It shows God’s anger toward men. In the person of God, pronounces the depravity of the world to have been intolerable, and obstinately incurable by any remedy. God was unwilling for his Spirit to be any longer held captive in a human body. If the Spirit of God departed from us, we leave mortal body.

2 Who were heroes at that time? (4) How was men’s inclination? (5, Ro 3:10-12) how was God’s heart? (6) What was God’s destination? (7, Ro 6:23) however what favor came upon Noah? (8,9)

4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

5The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. 6The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. 7So the LORD said, “I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them.” 8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

10 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; 11 there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”

-These made them the terror of the mighty in the land of the living; and, thus armed, they daringly insulted the rights of all their neighbours and trampled upon all that is just and sacred.

-Nephilim-meaning was men who were corrupted, tyranny, oppressor and so violent. They were giant. They were heroes. Heroes show the aspect at that time. Societies were full of violent and tyranny. They were great wickedness. Every thoughts were evil.

God was so grieved.(so mourn, sorrow and pain).

-How was God’s aspect after He created man. “it was very good” He had proud for man. The Septuagint uses the word adikia which means lawlessness. It is the lawlessness that makes people hate each other. The lawlessness that makes people live in conflict with each other, injure each other. Lawlessness was prevailed. (1Jn3:4) He observed that the streams of sin that flowed along in men's lives, and the breadth and depth of those streams: He saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth.

-God looks on our world, Depravity everywhere...everywhere. Now he was so sorrow because he made mankind. 1 Samuel 15:11 where God said, "I regret that I made Saul king," God expresses the sadness over that, that same chapter, verse 29 God calls Himself the glory of Israel and He says, "I will not lie or change My mind," says that God is not a man that He should change His mind.

Their wickedness was great, that is, abundance of sin was committed in all places, by all sorts of people. (v5). He observed the fountain of sin that was in men's hearts. The imagination of the thoughts of the heart was evil, their designs and devices were wicked.

Not only their heart is evil but also they did evil deliberately and designedly, contriving how to do mischief.

He wanted to remove all things from the earth because of man’s corruption. God loves men but he hates sin.

If sin is filled with God’s standard level, God’s judgment always comes upon them. God always warn about sin and wait for repentance. God cannot tolerate sin. And the reason He cannot tolerate sin is because He is absolutely holy, just, consistently pure and unchangingly so. He does not act capriciously. He does not act randomly. He does not act arbitrarily. He is not non-moral. He will act in consistently with His holy nature. If we don’t repent it, judgment comes to us. God is gracious, just and holy. Sin ultimately follows God’s wrath. (Rom 1:18-20)

- What does v8,9 means? Was Noah was probably unaffected by sin.? No, he was a sinful guy. in chapter 9, you can find his pretty ugly feature. He was a sinner. He was even a sinner after the Flood. He was a sinner before the Flood, but he escaped wrath and he escaped judgment because he found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

favor- it contains grace, favor, love mercy and protection. God’s favor came to him.

*God’s judgment plan and Noah’s ark. (9-22)

3. How was Noah’s life? (9-10) How was people’ condition at Noah’s time? (11-12) What was God’s direction to Noah? (13-16) What was the making Noah’s ark for other people? (Heb 11:7) How much did God give detail description to make it and to show next judgment and the way of our salvation? (14-16) (Mt 24:30-31,26:64, Rev 1:7, Jn3: 16-18, Acts 4:10-12)

9This is the account of Noah.

Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God. 10Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.

11Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. 12God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. 13So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. 14So make yourself an ark of cypress£ wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. 15This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high.£ 16Make a roof for it and finish£ the ark to within 18 inches£ of the top. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower,

middle and upper decks.

7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.

-God’s favor came into Noah. Even though that time was so corrupted, Noah could liv pious and moral life by God’s favor as Enoch did. God told him in verse 13, "The end of all flesh has come before Me and I'm going to destroy them all. You need to build a boat to protect yourself if you believe Me." And he believed God and God forgave his sin and God granted him the righteousness which is according to faith. God literally clothed him with His own righteousness because of his faith.(Ge 15:6). He believed God’s word so that he regarded as righteous. He is a clear illustration of salvation. He entered into a covenant with God. Look at verse 18, "I will establish My covenant with you." He entered into a relationship with God by faith. He was saved through faith in God.

-You can't be perfect, none of us can. He couldn't, you can't. It must mean that God viewed him as righteous and the only way that God could ever view you as righteous is if He covered you with His righteousness. As if He granted you His righteousness. God granted to Noah the garments of salvation, to borrow the language of Isaiah, the garment of righteousness. And He covered that man so that he was viewed by God as righteous. Why? Because God placed all of Noah's sins on Christ who one day on Calvary bore them and took the full punishment for Noah. He was justified. (Heb 9:22)

-People- full of violence and corrupted.(total depravity).God show final destination of judgment.

-To make ark to save him and his family as well as to condemn others. God doesn’t immediately punish men’s sin. He warn their sins until they repent their sin. When God punished Israel’s idolatry, he sent many prophets to repent otherwise God’s punishment would come. However they ignored their warning and became more stubborn and killed prophets. God’s punishment finally came to them. They became exile as Babylon captives. When Jesus warned the judgment of Jerusalem after 70 years, they ignored it. Romans soldiers invaded them, crushed all temple and almost annihilated them.

-Whenever God want to punish people, He warned people’s sin for 120 years through building Noah’s ark in the desert. Whoever saw building of the ark, they would know that God’s judgment would come. Building ark itself was proclaiming God’s judgment, and message to repent your sin and believe God’s judgment and accept God’s favor.

- Hebrew 11 7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith. He believed God, acknowledged the warning. God told him that he was going to drown the whole world because of sin. "He believed God in reverence, he prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which He condemned the world." His faith stood as a unambiguous condemnation of everyone else. While they mocked and laughed and ridiculed this stupid man for 120 years, building a boat, but because of his faith, because he stood against a condemned and sinful world, he became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

- God gave detail description to make ark.; size, materials, shape and so on.

Second judgment of fire will come as Bible already describes many times (Mt 24:30-31,26:64, Rev 1:7)

Our current ark is Jesus. There is no way only through faith in Christ. Jesus is the way of salvation God provided. (Heb 9:22,28) 22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

4. What was God’s covenant? (17-18) What should he prepare for keeping life of animals according to God’s direction? (19-21)

17I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. 18But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. 19You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. 20Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive. 21You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”

-Covenant is related with life. When someone had a covenant with the other and someone break it, someone has to pay even His life. So covenant is so important. The purpose of God’s judgment was to purify this world instead of destruction.

-God told what Noah should do to keep all kinds of animals.

5. How was Noah’s attitude toward God’s command? (22, 3, Ge7:5-10) How could Noah overcome all temptations and endure hardship and difficulties? (Ge 6:9,Heb 11:7) How was God’s warning accomplished? (Ge 7:11-12, 20-23) How do you prepare your ark of salvation? (Jn 5:24, Ro 1:16-17,10:4,9)

22Noah did everything just as God commanded him.

3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with[a] humans forever, for they are mortal[b]; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

9This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.

- When he made huge ark, there was no cloud at all. When people saw what he was doing, they would ridicule him and mark him. “ he is crazy”. It would not be easy for him to overcome doubt when he met this many tough times. It was not month or 1year. It took 120 years. It took for his whole life with his family. Faith needs patience. At that time, those who marked Noah, seemed like wise. But when flood came, who was really wise? Noah. Likewise, the time of God’s judgment will come. It needs to take time to live by faith. Nobody knows. But it sure, it will happen according to God’s words.

Also, If Noah partially made ark according to his own easy way instead of God’s way, what would happen? At the time of flood, Ark would be sink because water would come into ship. Our life is to prepare for our ark of salvation. When judgment comes, God will see our ark of faith. Our own good deed is not enough to be satisfied for the requirement of the righteousness. We just accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord by faith what God prepared as his amazing gift.

How could he overcome all hardship? There were no eclectic saw and truck and developed tools. It was not really easy to finish.

He overcame all hardship and difference because he feared God’s promise. He firmly trusted God’s promise and his faithfulness. Even though he couldn’t see the judgment at that time, all environment seemed against him, but he trusted what God told. Faith is being sure what we hope for and assurance what we do not see.”
